Hunter vs Mage: WoW Forever Class Comparison

The Hunter is the easy road: send the pet, shoot from range, loot, repeat. The Mage is the fast road in WoW Forever: freeze packs, blow them up with area damage, and portal away while everyone else is still riding.

Pick the Hunter if you want leveling with almost no frustration. Pick the Mage if you want bigger burst, real PvP tools and free travel. The rest of this page helps you make the call.

The verdict

For most players, take the Hunter in WoW Forever. It is the best solo class in our guides, the recommended first character. And the whole loop is send the pet, shoot from range, loot, repeat, with mistakes that rarely kill you.

The Mage is the better pick for a specific player. Someone who wants bigger burst, real PvP pedigree and portals, and who accepts that cloth armor and a melting mana bar punish careless pulls.

The Hunter wins the leveling game and the lazy grind. The Mage wins when a group covers its glass jaw. Most of your beta hours are the former.

Hunter vs Mage: head-to-head comparison

CategoryHunterMage
Leveling speed Winner The easiest solo leveler. Pet tanks, you shoot, almost no downtime. Fast with area pulls, but fragile and mana-hungry; one bad pull costs the run.
Solo play Winner Our guides' best solo class. Bear, boar or turtle tanks while you loot. Tagged solo and controls most fights, but dies faster when control slips.
Dungeons Pet damage plus Marksmanship raid attack power, but much weaker without the pet. Winner Fire is built for exactly this: the party covers the fragility, burst does the talking.
Raiding Marksmanship brings attack power for the raid, but pure damage trails Fire. Winner Fire posts top raid numbers. One job, best in class at it.
PvP Even Survival is built for PvP: traps, kiting, a real melee kick. Even Repo PvP shortlist. Slows, freezes, burst. Also a pick.
Gold farming Winner Pet tanks elites while you shoot: low downtime, steady gold per hour. Area pulls and portals, but drinking and repair bills eat the margin.

Playing Hunter in this matchup

The Hunter loop is the simplest winning formula in WoW Forever: send in the pet, shoot from range, loot, repeat. Our guides calls it the smoothest ride in the game and the easiest solo leveler, and recommends it as the first character because mistakes rarely kill you.

WoW Forever rebuilt how each tree uses its pet. Beast Mastery gets Focused Fire, more damage for you and your pet while the pet is active. And Summon Hawk, an 18-second dive-bomb that shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot, so every Hawk is a real tradeoff. Marksmanship gets Rapid Killing, your next Shot hits harder after a killing blow, plus Rapid Recuperation for mana.

Survival gets Strider Kick, a real melee kick. And Resourcefulness, cheaper traps for the gadget player. Marksmanship also brings attack power for the whole raid: the Hunter's group ticket at endgame. The con list is short but real. Much weaker without the pet around, our guides' stated weak spot.

Lose the pet and you are a fragile ranged class with no control toolkit to fall back on. Lone Wolf trades the pet for personal damage, but only if you hunt solo, which most players do not. Tame a tank pet first, bear, boar or turtle, and treat its survival as yours. Against the Mage, the Hunter's argument is pure forgiveness.

Playing Mage in this matchup

The Mage answers the Hunter's pet with control. Where the Hunter delegates survival to an animal, the Mage manufactures it. Frost slows and freezes keep enemies off you, Fingers of Frost makes your next spells count as Frozen, exactly when Ice Lance hits for triple damage. No pet to feed, no pet to lose.

The burst side is where the Mage pulls away on paper. Fire gets Hot Streak: each crit with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast or Scorch cuts your Pyroblast cast time, stacking three deep. Save Fire for dungeons and raids, where the party covers for you. Arcane offers Arcane Blast as a ramp-up game and Missile Barrage for fast, free Missiles.

The price is everything the Hunter does not pay. The Mage is fragile, mana melts fast if wasted, and our guides warns new mages against breaking their own sheep and standing in melee range. No pet absorbs the bad pull. Tagged Solo and PvP and on the shortlist, but solo here means skilled solo, not forgiving solo.

What keeps the Mage in this fight is everything around the damage. Portals save tons of travel time, free food and water cut costs, and races run deep. Human, Gnome, Undead, Troll, Skyborne Alliance-side, with Orc brand new in WoW Forever. Gnomes get more mana and a root escape; Undead ignore most fear effects.

How WoW Forever's talent changes shift this matchup

WoW Forever's Hunter changes all circle one question: what is the pet for? Focused Fire answers it, more damage for you and the pet while the pet is active. Summon Hawk adds a real decision, 18 seconds of dive-bomb damage sharing a cooldown with Arcane Shot. Rapid Recuperation attacks the old mana friction; Rapid Killing turns grinding into a combo game.

The Mage's changes are narrower but pointed. Hot Streak is the headline: Fire finally has a burst engine, crits converting into faster Pyroblasts three stacks deep. Fingers of Frost makes the safest leveling spec safer. Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage serve the ramp-up players. Fewer brand-new Mage talents than some classes. So read changed rank text fresh.

The classic verdict was Hunter for the solo road, Mage for the group ceiling, and WoW Forever keeps it. The Hunter's crown gets heavier with mana sustain and kill-chaining. The Mage's ceiling rises where Hot Streak runs free. Choosing blind for the beta: Hunter to learn the game, Mage to master one corner of it.

Hunter vs Mage: common questions

Hunter or Mage for a brand-new player in the Forever beta?

Hunter: our guides' recommended first character because mistakes rarely kill you. The Mage punishes careless pulls with cloth armor and fast-draining mana, and new mages die to broken sheep and melee range. The Hunter's pet absorbs your learning curve.

Which one farms gold better?

For steady, brain-off grinding, the Hunter: pet tanks, you shoot, almost no downtime, and Rapid Killing rewards chaining kills. For clearing camps fast and skipping travel, the Mage: area pulls plus portals. Hunter for zero-stress gold; Mage if you enjoy the farming itself.

Do I need my pet out all the time as a Hunter?

Almost always yes. The weak spot is being much weaker without the pet around, and Lone Wolf is only worth it if you hunt solo. Tame a tank pet first, bear, boar or turtle, and keep it alive like your life depends on it.

Which is better in PvP, Hunter or Mage?

Both are tagged for PvP and both are real picks: call it even and pick your style. Survival brings traps, kiting and Strider Kick; the Mage brings slows, freezes and burst. The Hunter controls the range; the Mage controls the fight.
