Hunter vs Paladin: Playstyle, Strengths & Differences
The Hunter is the smoothest solo leveler in WoW Forever: your pet tanks, your mistakes rarely kill you, and downtime barely exists. The Paladin is the safest group character: it almost never dies, and groups always make room for a tank or healer.
Pick the Hunter for the fastest, easiest road to the beta cap. Pick the Paladin if guaranteed dungeon invites and near-immortality matter more. This page compares both so you can decide with confidence.
The verdict
Pick the hunter. For most players this is the clearest verdict on the site. The smoothest leveling ride in WoW Forever, a tagged solo class, a real PvP toolkit in Survival, and top-tier gold farming. The paladin's own guide admits the pace is slower than the pure damage classes.
The paladin's case is the group game. Groups always make room for one, because Holy heals and Protection tanks. And Templar's Bulwark hands you an absorb equal to your full health for 8 seconds when things go wrong. If you want guaranteed dungeon invites and a character that cannot be killed by accident, the paladin is unmatched.
But be honest about the leveling. Retribution kills fastest and it is still slow. The hunter gets you to the fun parts sooner; the paladin makes sure you survive them. Most players should take the speed.
Hunter vs Paladin: head-to-head comparison
| Category | Hunter | Paladin |
|---|---|---|
| Leveling speed | Winner The smoothest ride in WoW Forever: pet tanks, you shoot, loot, repeat. Rapid Killing rewards each kill; Rapid Recuperation keeps mana flowing. | Steady and safe, with Retribution killing fastest, but slower than any pure damage class by the guide's own admission. |
| Solo play | Winner Tagged solo class and our guides' recommended first character. Much weaker without the pet, close to unbeatable with it. | Bubbles and blessings get you out of almost anything. You rarely die; you just kill slowly. |
| Dungeons | Strong ranged DPS, but damage slots are the most contested in every group. | Winner Tanks or heals on demand. Templar's Bulwark is a 100% max-health absorb for 8 seconds, with real pull control from blessings and seals. |
| Raiding | Marksmanship brings attack power for the whole raid, but it is still one DPS slot among many. | Winner Holy is hard to kill and harder to replace; Protection tanks. The plate-wearing healer every composition wants. |
| PvP | Winner Tagged for PvP, with Survival built for it and Strider Kick as a real melee kick. | Not tagged for PvP. Retribution has burst, but our guides gives no PvP tag and no duelist tools. |
| Gold farming | Winner Pet tanks elites while Rapid Killing chains kill to kill. One of the best farmers in the game. | Safe farming with no risk, but slow kills make it a chore. Paladins farm for safety, not speed. |
Playing Hunter in this matchup
The hunter's argument is momentum. Beast Mastery makes your pet hit harder every rank while Focused Fire adds damage for both of you while the pet is active. And Marksmanship turns every kill into the next one. Rapid Killing makes your next shot hit harder after a killing blow. Rapid Recuperation keeps your mana flowing.
WoW Forever's hunter toys are practical. Summon Hawk sends a hawk to dive-bomb your target for 18 seconds, but it shares a cooldown with Arcane Shot, so every press is a real trade. Survival gets Strider Kick, an actual melee kick for when things get close, and Resourcefulness cuts the mana cost of traps. Nothing here changes the core loop; it all removes friction from it.
The con is dependence: much weaker without the pet around, per our guides. Lose the pet and you are a mediocre archer with no plan B; Lone Wolf trades the pet for personal damage only if you hunt solo. Tame a tank pet first (bear, boar, or turtle), keep it alive, and accept your damage has a leash with a health bar. Against the paladin, the hunter wins everything about moving fast and loses everything about being needed.
Playing Paladin in this matchup
The paladin's argument is that death is optional. Plate armor, bubbles, and blessings get you out of almost anything, and leveling is steady and safe in a way nothing else here promises. Retribution kills fastest while leveling, with Crusade as an always-on damage boost; start Holy or Protection if group content is the priority.
WoW Forever rebuilt the paladin aggressively. And the new tools are active, not passive. Light's Vigil marks a target so your next Holy Shock has no cooldown, heals their party or damages enemies, and refunds most of the 730 mana it cost. Templar's Bulwark is an absorb shield equal to 100% of maximum health for 8 seconds. Twist of Light lets you swap seals and still land the replaced seal's effect with your next swing.
The removals sting. Consecration is gone from Holy, Blessing of Kings and Blessing of Sanctuary are gone from Protection, and Improved Lay on Hands is gone entirely. The WoW Forever paladin makes active decisions instead of coasting on passive blessings, which is better design and more work. The pace problem survives untouched: slower than the pure damage classes, per the guide itself. Against the hunter, the paladin's wins are all social: instant groups as tank or healer, and the new Undead Paladin starting in Tirisfal Glades for Horde players.
How WoW Forever's talent changes shift this matchup
WoW Forever pulls these two in opposite directions. The hunter's new talents smooth the solo loop. Rapid Recuperation ends the mana breaks, Rapid Killing rewards momentum, Summon Hawk adds a real pet cooldown choice. And Strider Kick plus Resourcefulness give Survival PvP and gadget depth.
The paladin's overhaul is bigger and more double-edged. Light's Vigil, Templar's Bulwark, and Twist of Light are exciting capstones giving each tree a signature moment, and Infusion of Light plus Reverence fix Holy's mana. But the removals are real losses for the lazy paladin: no more Consecration ticking away, no more Blessing of Kings as fire-and-forget. WoW Forever's paladin is stronger and busier, and the classic verdict survives: hunter for the journey, paladin for the destination's group content.

Hunter vs Paladin: common questions
I die constantly on other classes. Will paladin actually fix that?
Mostly, yes. Plate plus bubbles plus blessings plus self-healing make the paladin the hardest class here to kill by accident; the guide's summary is steady and safe, you rarely die. If staying alive matters more than speed, the paladin delivers.
Is hunter really the best first character?
Our guides says so outright, and it is right. The pet tanks your mistakes, ranged damage keeps you out of trouble, and the rotation is simple enough to learn while you learn the game. The one warning: you are much weaker without the pet, so learn pet management early. Tame a bear, boar, or turtle first.
Can paladins do damage at 60, or am I signing up to heal forever?
WoW Forever helps: Crusade is an always-on damage boost, stronger against demons and undead, and the Twist of Light capstone adds real seal gameplay. But our guides do not overturn the structural truth that paladin raid value lives in Holy and Protection. Play Retribution for the fantasy, not for a top damage slot.
Which one should I pick if I want to do dungeons while leveling?
The paladin, and it is not close. Tanks and healers get instant groups at every bracket; damage dealers wait. A paladin queues as either, while the hunter queues as damage alongside every other hunter, mage, and warlock on the server. If dungeons are your main leveling diet, group demand beats speed.
