Mage vs Warlock: Which Class Should You Play?
The Mage is speed and control in WoW Forever: area pulls, portals, and burst that tops raid meters. The Warlock is stamina and inevitability: dots, drains and a demon, grinding with almost no downtime and winning duels.
Pick the Mage for speed, gold and group demand. Pick the Warlock to grind forever and win 1v1s. The full comparison below will settle it for you.
The verdict
The mage wins for most players in WoW Forever. Frost is the safest way to level a mage, area-of-effect pulls make it the fastest leveler of the two, portals save hours of travel. And Fire's Hot Streak burst puts up the biggest raid numbers. The warlock's case is real: drain-tanking with almost no downtime, the best 1v1 toolkit of the two, and a demon for every situation. Pick the mage for speed, gold and demand; pick the warlock to grind forever and win duels.
Mage vs Warlock: head-to-head comparison
| Category | Mage | Warlock |
|---|---|---|
| Leveling speed | Winner Quick with area-of-effect pulls; Frost kites safely and portals cut travel time. | Steady drain-tanking with almost no downtime, but single-target and slower. |
| Solo play | Fragile; cloth and mana punish careless pulls, and breaking your own sheep ends runs. | Winner Drain-tank with a demon bodyguard; the grind does not stop. |
| Dungeons | Winner Crowd control plus Fire's burning damage over time for top group numbers. | Dots, curses and Bane of Havoc splash; strong, but threat management is constant. |
| Raiding | Winner Fire's Hot Streak Pyroblast burst for top raid numbers; always wanted. | Chaos Bolt and Conflagrate hit hard, but Destruction drinks more and pulls threat faster. |
| PvP | Frost control is real, but a warlock's fear and drains are the nightmare matchup. | Winner The 1v1 king: fear, dots, drain-tank; named in WoW Forever's PvP shortlist. |
| Gold farming | Winner Area-of-effect farming is the best gold per hour in the game. | Grinds endlessly with no downtime, but cannot match mage AoE gold. |
Playing Mage in this matchup
The mage is speed. Frost is the safest way to level a mage. Slows and freezes keep enemies off you and your mana bar intact, while area-of-effect pulls level faster than anything else in this matchup. Fire brings burning damage over time for top raid numbers, and Arcane is the mana-control glass cannon with burst windows and free casts. Then there are the portals and the free food, the quality-of-life package no other class touches, saving hours of travel where every flight path is contested.
WoW Forever's mage changes are fewer than some classes got. But the ones that landed are load-bearing. Fire's Hot Streak is the new burst identity. Each crit with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast or Scorch cuts your Pyroblast cast time, stacking up to three times. Arcane Blast turns Arcane into a ramp-up game, each cast raising your other spells' damage while making itself pricier. And Missile Barrage makes the next Arcane Missiles fast and free. Frost's Fingers of Frost makes your next spells count as if the target were Frozen, when Ice Lance hits for triple damage. Read the rank text on the changed Pyroblast, Impact, Burning Soul and Improved Scorch instead of assuming Classic numbers.
The cons are the classic ones and they are not negotiable. Cloth armor and mana make mistakes visible. You are fragile, your mana melts fast if you waste it. And our guides warns new mages against the two signature deaths, breaking your own sheep and standing in melee range. Fire is for dungeons and raids where the party covers you; solo, it drinks and dies. The Orc mage is new in WoW Forever, Gnomes get more mana and can escape roots, and Undead ignore most fear effects.
Playing Warlock in this matchup
The warlock is stamina. Where the mage bursts and drinks, the warlock drains and continues. Affliction's damage-over-time spells drain enemies dry while you drain-tank, Demonology fields stronger demons including one that can tank for you, and Destruction answers with Chaos Bolt and Conflagrate. The class grinds with almost no downtime, the Voidwalker tanks while your dots work. And the free mounts mean you are riding while everyone else in the fresh economy is still saving.
WoW Forever gave the warlock the broader rework of the two. Affliction's new engine is the story. Pandemic makes your dots crit harder, Wrack is a channeled spell that also makes the target take more damage from your other dots. And Soul Siphon makes drains hit harder for every other Affliction spell on the target. Demonic Pact ends the old buff-versus-pet dilemma, since Demonic Sacrifice is no longer cancelled by summoning a different demon. Destruction's Bane of Havoc splashes a share of everything you do onto a second target. And Demonic Brand quiets Searing Pain's threat while branding the target so your pet's attacks generate high threat.
The honest weaknesses. A lot of spells and pets to juggle, pet threat to manage, and fear control that punishes the careless. Because fearing a mob into another pack is a rite of passage nobody enjoys. Destruction bursts harder but drinks more and pulls threat faster. And while the warlock summons, it does not portal: your travel is your free mount and your own two feet, generous but not a teleport. The Troll warlock is new in WoW Forever; Orc pets hit harder.
How WoW Forever's talent changes shift this matchup
The classic debate had a clean shape: mage levels faster and farms richer, warlock duels better and grinds longer. WoW Forever keeps that shape but sharpens both edges. The mage got fewer brand-new talents than some classes. Yet Hot Streak rewrites Fire's burst identity, Fingers of Frost plus triple-damage Ice Lance rewards the control play mages already do. And Arcane Blast turns Arcane into a ramp-up game.
The warlock's rework is broader. Substantial changes across all three trees, with old prerequisites and capstone paths moved enough that our guides warns against copying a Classic build. Affliction's new dot and drain engine is the standout, turning the spec's inevitability into real scaling: more dots maintained means harder crits, harder drains, more pressure. Bane of Havoc gives Destruction a two-target splash the classic spec never had.
For the beta, the practical shift is economic. Portals are worth more when nobody has epic mounts and flight paths run through contested zones; a mage deletes travel time the warlock still pays. The warlock answers with the free mount, weeks of saved gold in a fresh economy, and drain-tanking that needs no downtime. Speed versus stamina is still the whole matchup.
Which one should you pick?
- Leveling fast with area-of-effect pulls is the priority.
- Portals are worth more to you than any pet or summon.
- You want the best gold farming in the game.
- Crowd control and top raid numbers are your idea of group value.
- The Orc mage is new in WoW Forever and the fantasy clicks.
- You accept fragility in exchange for speed.
- You want to drain-tank elites while your demon holds aggro.
- Duels are your endgame and fear is your favorite spell.
- The Affliction dot engine, Pandemic through Soul Siphon, excites you.
- Free mounts beat portals when the economy is fresh.
- You would rather never stop grinding than burst and drink.
- Dark caster flavor wins over the mage's utility kit.

Mage vs Warlock: common questions
Which one makes more gold?
Mage, and it is the least debatable verdict on this page. Area-of-effect farming is the best gold per hour in the game. Warlocks grind endlessly with no downtime, but no drain rotation competes with a mage pulling half a zone at once.
Portals versus summons: which matters more in the beta?
Portals, for most players. In a fresh beta with contested flight paths, skipping travel saves real hours. Summons shine when your group is scattered and you are the one who made it. If you play with the same group nightly, the warlock's summon closes the gap.
Which is easier to level?
Mage, if you learn Frost's kiting game. Area-of-effect pulls level faster than anything the warlock does, and portals cut the travel tax. But the mage punishes mistakes: cloth armor, fast-melting mana, and a broken sheep end runs. The warlock is slower and far more forgiving.
I mostly want to raid. Which cloth DPS gets invited?
Both, honestly. Fire's Hot Streak burst puts up top raid numbers and mages bring crowd control. While Destruction's Chaos Bolt and Conflagrate hit hard with Bane of Havoc splash on two-target fights. Pick by playstyle, not by invite odds; neither is getting benched.
