Paladin vs Warlock: Which Class Fits Your Playstyle?

The Warlock is the best solo engine here: dots, drains and a pet tank, with almost no downtime and top-tier gold farming. The Paladin is the group anchor of WoW Forever: tank or healer means instant invites, and it almost never dies.

Pick the Warlock for the solo grind. Pick the Paladin to tank or heal. This page breaks down where each one wins so you can choose.

The verdict

Most players should pick the warlock in WoW Forever. It levels faster with almost no downtime, farms gold at a top-tier rate, carries the PvP tag the paladin lacks, and does it all on a simpler game plan. The paladin's famous survivability is real, but the warlock matches it in practice. Drain-tanking and a Voidwalker mean you rarely die either, you just kill things twice as fast.

Where the paladin wins, it wins big. Tank or healer means instant groups at every level, and Holy is the plate-wearing healer that is hard to kill and harder to replace. WoW Forever's new capstones make each of those jobs more interesting than the Classic versions. In raids the pair splits honestly. The paladin owns the scarcest healer and tank slots, while the warlock brings top-tier damage every roster wants.

The honest summary. Pick warlock for the best solo engine in this pair, pick paladin to tank or heal. Anyone telling you Retribution out-grinds Affliction is selling the fantasy, not the math.

Paladin vs Warlock: head-to-head comparison

CategoryPaladinWarlock
Leveling speed Retribution kills fastest: steady and safe, but slower than the pure damage classes by the guide's own admission. Winner Dots tick while the Voidwalker holds aggro; drain-tanking means almost no downtime. The grinder just keeps going.
Solo play Bubbles and blessings get you out of almost anything; you rarely die. Winner Voidwalker tanks, dots kill, drains refill your bar. Dies about as rarely, kills far faster.
Dungeons Winner Tank or healer on demand; groups always make room. Templar's Bulwark is a 100% max-health absorb for 8 seconds. Bane of Havoc splashes a share of everything onto a second target; still one damage dealer among many.
Raiding Even Holy and Protection fill the scarcest raid roles; hard to kill, harder to replace. Even Top-tier ranged DPS with Bane of Havoc cleave and Demonic Pact utility; every raid wants several.
PvP Not tagged for PvP; Retribution has burst but our guides gives no PvP tag. Winner Tagged for PvP and in our guides' PvP shortlist. Fear plus drain-tanking wins long fights.
Gold farming Safe farming with zero risk, but slow kills make it a chore. Winner Affliction dots half a zone at once, free mounts cut travel, almost no downtime. Top-tier farmer.

Playing Paladin in this matchup

The paladin's pitch is that it cannot be killed and everyone wants one. Holy keeps the party healed as a plate-wearing healer for single targets and raid-wide damage. Protection tanks with a shield and strong defenses. Retribution deals heavy burst damage in melee with auras that lift the whole party.

WoW Forever's paladin is one of the biggest overhauls in the beta. And the new toys are exciting. Light's Vigil marks a target: your next Holy Shock has no cooldown, heals their party or damages enemies, and refunds most of the 730 mana it cost. Templar's Bulwark is an absorb shield equal to 100% of your maximum health for 8 seconds. Twist of Light lets you swap seals while still landing the replaced seal's effect on your next swing.

The removals hurt. Holy lost Consecration, Protection lost Blessing of Kings and Blessing of Sanctuary, and Improved Lay on Hands is gone entirely. The WoW Forever paladin makes active decisions instead of coasting on passive blessings. The pace problem is untouched: still slower than the pure damage classes, by the guide's own admission. Against the warlock, the paladin's argument is social. Instant groups as tank or healer, plate that forgives mistakes, and the new Undead Paladin starting in Tirisfal Glades for Horde players.

Playing Warlock in this matchup

The warlock's pitch is inevitability with style. Affliction is death by a thousand cuts while you drain-tank. Pandemic makes damage-over-time spells crit harder, Wrack is a channeled spell that makes the target take more damage from your other dots. And Soul Siphon makes drains hit harder for every other Affliction spell on the target. Demonology gives stronger demons including a tank pet, and Demonic Pact ends the old buff-versus-pet choice. Destruction is the loud tree: Chaos Bolt and Conflagrate, with Bane of Havoc splashing a share of everything onto a second target.

The solo engine is the Voidwalker plus drain-tanking plus almost no downtime, the best pure grind in this pair. You dot, the demon holds, the drains refill your health, and you move to the next pack while the paladin is still finishing the first one. Free mounts cut the travel tax that eats every other class's gold per hour.

The cons are the ones our guides warns about. A lot of spells and pets to juggle, pet threat to manage, and fear control to learn the hard way. Destruction drinks more and pulls threat faster, so the loud tree is for groups, not grinding. Against the paladin, the warlock's edge is pace: both are hard to kill, only one kills fast. The paladin's bubbles get it out of trouble; the warlock's dots mean it was never in trouble, and it is already looting while the paladin catches up.

How WoW Forever's talent changes shift this matchup

WoW Forever sharpens both identities rather than blurring them. The warlock's new tools deepen the grind. Pandemic's harder crits, Wrack's amplification, Demonic Pact's removal of the buff-versus-pet tax, Bane of Havoc's two-target splash.

The paladin's overhaul is more dramatic and more double-edged. Light's Vigil, Templar's Bulwark, and Twist of Light are signature moments each tree was missing, making all three more active and more fun. But Consecration, Blessing of Kings, Blessing of Sanctuary, and Improved Lay on Hands are gone, and with them the passive, low-effort paladin. WoW Forever's paladin is stronger and busier, which suits engaged players and punishes coasters. Holy against fel comes down to what you want to be: the engine that never stops, or the wall that never falls.

Paladin vs Warlock: common questions

Which one is actually harder to kill while leveling?

Both are famously durable, but they earn it differently. The paladin wears plate and escapes with bubbles and blessings, while the warlock holds aggro on a Voidwalker and refills health with drains. In practice the warlock dies about as rarely and finishes fights faster, because the best defense is a dead enemy. Survivability is a tie; efficiency is a warlock win.

Is Retribution viable at 60 now, or is it still a meme?

WoW Forever helps: Crusade is a constant damage boost, stronger against demons and undead, and the Twist of Light capstone adds seal gameplay. But paladin raid value still lives in Holy and Protection. Play Retribution for the fantasy, not for a top damage slot.

Which one makes more gold?

The warlock, comfortably. Affliction dots multiple mobs at once, downtime is near zero, and free mounts cut travel time. The paladin farms safely but slowly, and slow kills are the enemy of gold per hour. If farming funds your beta, this category alone can decide the pick.

Warlock or paladin for world PvP?

The warlock. It carries our guides' PvP tag and a spot in the PvP shortlist, with fear control and drain-tanking built for long, ugly fights. The paladin is not tagged for PvP and brings no duelist toolkit; it survives fights it cannot win. If world PvP is your endgame, take the fel.
