Level-30 beta Hunter Lone Wolf Marksmanship build

Level-30 petless Marksmanship experiment · 0 / 16 / 5 · 21 standard talent points. Reviewed 13 October 2026.

This petless version keeps Lone Wolf, Careful Aim and Trueshot Aura in Marksmanship, then takes Improved Tracking from Survival. Match tracking to the enemy type to gain damage on eligible targets. It favors broad personal damage over extra ranged critical-damage ranks.

How to play this beta version

  1. Dismiss the pet for Lone Wolf and set the matching tracking type before attacking.
  2. Use Aimed Shot and other trained ranged attacks from a safe position; maintain Trueshot Aura.
  3. Keep enough Mana for movement and utility, and change tracking when the pull changes creature type.

What changes from the 51-point build?

  • Sniper Shot requires 31 points and is absent.
  • Improved Tracking does not help an unmatched target; this plan has no Mortal Shots ranks.

The deeper Marksmanship alternative keeps four Mortal Shots ranks and one more Efficiency rank. It is preferable when tracking cannot match the target or your critical chance makes those ranks more valuable.

Why this beta talent split?

Lone Wolf is reachable before a 21-point milestone, leaving room for Survival tracking without losing Trueshot Aura. Beast Mastery pet talents conflict with petless play; Deadly Aspects is its usable ranged alternative, but adds a proc rather than the matched-target modifier.

How to play Lone Wolf Marksmanship

Keep no active pet when you want the Lone Wolf damage bonus. Maintain Hunter's Mark, fit ranged shots around your auto-attacks and use Sniper Shot when its long cast is safe. Evaluate Serpent Sting and Mana spending against the length of the fight. Solo play requires more trap use and kiting because you give up a pet's tanking and control. Compare total damage with and without a pet on the encounter rather than assuming petless play always wins.

Why Lone Wolf Marksmanship takes these talents

Lone Wolf grants 20% increased attack damage while no pet is active; it does not permanently remove your pet. Careful Aim and Mortal Shots form the ranged scaling core. Rapid Killing reduces Rapid Fire's cooldown and can empower a shot after a qualifying kill; Mana regeneration is supplied by the separate Rapid Recuperation talent, which this build does not select. Survivalist and Deflection help compensate for some of the lost pet protection.
