Paladin vs Priest: Playstyle, Strengths & Differences
The Priest is the purest healer: big direct heals for emergencies, shields that prevent damage, and a Shadow spec for solo play and PvP. The Paladin is the safer main in WoW Forever: plate armor, three roles, and a body that almost never dies.
Pick the Priest if healing is the job and raiding is the goal. Pick the Paladin if you want the flexible character that never waits for a group. This page helps you decide between them.
The verdict
Split verdict in WoW Forever, and the split is clean. The priest is the better healer. Holy owns the moment the tank drops to ten percent, Discipline prevents damage instead of chasing it. And Shadow is a solo and PvP toolkit the paladin cannot match. The paladin is the better main for most players. Three roles instead of two, a body that almost never dies, and a tank that groups will always make room for. Pick the priest if healing is the job and raiding is the goal; pick the paladin if you want the safer, more flexible character that never waits for a group.
Paladin vs Priest: head-to-head comparison
| Category | Paladin | Priest |
|---|---|---|
| Leveling speed | Retribution is slow but safe; the pace is the class's known weak spot. | Winner Shadow kills faster than Retribution and barely drinks; wand early, then Mind Flay. |
| Solo play | Winner Rarely dies; bubbles and blessings solve bad pulls, just slowly. | Shadow is strong but fragile; cloth armor and mana punish careless pulls. |
| Dungeons | Winner Plate tank plus plate healer in one body; groups always make room. | A superb healer, but one of several; nothing guarantees the priest a slot. |
| Raiding | Holy is a single-target and raid-damage specialist who refuses to die. | Winner The raid healer every group leans on; big direct heals own the heavy moments. |
| PvP | No PvP tag in WoW Forever; defensive to a fault and short on finishing power. | Winner Tagged for PvP, and the Shadow side is scary. |
| Gold farming | Retribution grinds slowly; the class lacks efficient farming tools. | Winner Shadow farms with Mind Flay and low downtime; modestly better, still no farmer. |
Playing Paladin in this matchup
Holy is a plate-wearing healer for the moments that matter. Light's Vigil marks a target. Your next Holy Shock loses its cooldown, heals their party or damages enemies, and refunds most of the mana. Infusion of Light and Reverence keep the mana engine turning. Against the priest's cloth, the paladin's argument is simple. The healer who cannot be killed keeps healing.
Protection tanks on blessings, seals and pull control, with a real panic button. Templar's Bulwark absorbs damage equal to your entire health pool for eight seconds, with Sacred Duty and Iron Creed filling out the rest of the defenses. No priest spec can say any of this, and in the dungeon-group economy that is worth more than any healing meter.
Retribution is the leveling path and the crusader fantasy. Slow heavy hits, party-lifting auras. And Crusade as a permanent damage boost that hits demons and undead even harder. The Twist of Light capstone turns seal-swapping into real gameplay: swap seals and still trigger the replaced seal's effect with your next swing. Level Retribution, respec when you pivot to healing.
The cons are pace and pruning. Slower pace than the pure damage classes is the called-out weak spot. And Retribution kills noticeably slower than a Shadow priest. The pruning was severe: Holy lost Consecration, Protection lost Kings and Sanctuary, and Improved Lay on Hands is gone entirely.
Playing Priest in this matchup
Discipline prevents damage instead of chasing it. Penance is a two second channeled volley of holy bolts that damages an enemy or heals an ally, Divine Aegis turns critical heals into small shields. And Renewed Hope rounds out the kit. Power Infusion was changed rather than removed. This is the thinking player's healing tree. And the priest's alone.
Holy owns the moment the tank drops to ten percent. Big direct heals for the heaviest raid damage, Binding Heal healing you and your target together. And Prayer of Mending bouncing between party members each time its heal lands. No paladin talent replicates that burst of raw throughput on a dying tank.
Shadow is the reason priests do not dread leveling. Shadow damage feeds health back to you, Devouring Contagion spreads your Devouring Plague to someone nearby when an enemy dies with it active. And the whole tree barely drinks. The briefs give the exact recipe. Wand through the early levels, then Mind Flay everything after.
The cons are fragility and competition. Cloth armor and mana punish careless pulls. And the priest is not tagged as a solo class for a reason. Gone in WoW Forever are Divine Spirit, Unbreakable Will, Improved Power Word: Fortitude and Force of Will. And every other healer class is applying for the same raid slots.
How WoW Forever's talent changes shift this matchup
WoW Forever reworked the paladin more aggressively than the priest. The paladin lost Consecration from Holy, Kings and Sanctuary from Protection, and Improved Lay on Hands entirely, replaced by active decisions. Light's Vigil turns Holy Shock into a burst window, Twist of Light makes seal-swapping a mechanic. And Templar's Bulwark is the strongest defensive cooldown the tree has ever had. The classic paladin was simple and slow; WoW Forever fixed simple.
The priest kept its familiar identities, with new talents sharpening each tree's job. Penance and Divine Aegis make Discipline proactive, Prayer of Mending and Binding Heal widen Holy's answers, Devouring Contagion rewards Shadow for dotting packs. Net effect: the priest's healing lead is intact and slightly widened, the paladin's flexibility lead is widened by the three-role rework, and the choice is cleaner than ever.
Which one should you pick?
- Your group ever needs a tank; Protection is real and the priest has no answer.
- You hate dying; plate, blessings and Templar's Bulwark make death rare.
- The Undead Paladin fantasy appeals; it is new in WoW Forever, starting in Tirisfal Glades.
- Dungeon queues matter; a tank who can also heal never waits.
- Raid-wide utility appeals; auras and blessings lift the whole party passively.
- Healing is the job; Holy's big direct heals own the moments that decide boss kills.
- You want the faster leveling; Shadow kills faster than Retribution and barely drinks.
- PvP interests you; the Shadow side is scary and the paladin has no equivalent.
- You like preventing damage; Discipline's shields, Penance and Divine Aegis are unique.
- Raid healing is your endgame; Prayer of Mending and Binding Heal are built for heavy damage.

Paladin vs Priest: common questions
Which healer is better for keeping the main tank alive?
The priest, specifically Holy. Big direct heals are built for the moment the tank drops to ten percent, and Binding Heal covers you both at once. The paladin is a strong single-target healer, but the priest's throughput ceiling on a dying tank is why raids lean on them.
Can I level as Holy paladin or Holy priest, or is that a trap?
Both, frankly. Leveling as Holy on either class is slow and mana-hungry next to the damage specs. Level the paladin as Retribution and the priest as Shadow, then respec when a group needs your healing.
My friends sometimes need a tank. Does that settle it?
The paladin, without question. Protection is a real tanking tree and groups always need tanks. The priest has no tanking spec at all. If your friends are short a tank even occasionally, three roles beat two.
Does the new Undead Paladin change the faction math?
It scrambles the old math. Undead Paladins are brand new in WoW Forever, starting in Tirisfal Glades, so Horde players are no longer locked out. Gnome Priests are also new. Faction no longer decides this matchup; the playstyle does.
