Paladin vs Shaman: What Are the Key Differences?
The Shaman is the versatile main: two real damage specs, plus totems and Bloodlust that raids bring two of you for. The Paladin is the immovable object of WoW Forever: real tanking and near-immortality that no Shaman spec can touch.
Pick the Shaman for the more versatile character. Pick the Paladin if tanking calls to you at all. This page compares the two side by side.
The verdict
For most players the shaman takes the mirror. It levels faster, it brings two real damage specs to the paladin's one. Totems plus Bloodlust plus Windfury make it the raid's force multiplier with the best invite security in WoW Forever. But the paladin owns the two things the shaman cannot touch: real tanking and near-immortality. A Protection paladin is the steadiest tank in this comparison and a Holy paladin refuses to die. Pick the shaman for the more versatile main; pick the paladin if tanking calls to you at all, because nothing on the shaman side answers it.
Paladin vs Shaman: head-to-head comparison
| Category | Paladin | Shaman |
|---|---|---|
| Leveling speed | Retribution is steady and safe but slow; the pace is the class's known weak spot. | Winner Enhancement's slow two-hander grind kills steadily with almost no downtime. |
| Solo play | Winner Rarely dies; plate, bubbles and blessings solve nearly any bad pull. | Totems make most fights easier, but the shaman is squishier when caught. |
| Dungeons | Winner Plate tank plus plate healer in one body; groups always make room. | Totems and flexible healing plus real DPS specs; also highly wanted. |
| Raiding | Even Blessings, auras and an unkillable Holy healer; harder to replace. | Even Totems, Windfury, Bloodlust; raids usually bring two. A tie of raid value. |
| PvP | Even No PvP tag; defensive to a fault and short on finishing power. | Even No PvP tag either; burst exists but the kit is built for groups. Tie. |
| Gold farming | Retribution grinds slowly; the class lacks efficient farming tools. | Winner Enhancement grinds steadier and faster than Retribution; the less-bad farmer. |
Playing Paladin in this matchup
The paladin is the half of this mirror that refuses to die. Plate armor, blessings, bubbles. And a Holy tree our guides call hard to kill and harder to replace. WoW Forever's Light's Vigil capstone marks a target so the next Holy Shock has no cooldown. It heals their party or damages enemies, and refunds most of the mana, giving the unkillable healer a burst window.
Protection is the tanking tree the shaman cannot answer. Tanking built on blessings, seals and pull control, with Templar's Bulwark absorbing one hundred percent of maximum health for eight seconds, plus Sacred Duty and Iron Creed. The shaman has no tanking spec at all. If your group needs a tank, the paladin is not the better pick, it is the only pick.
Retribution is the slow, heavy crusader fantasy. Auras that lift the whole party, Crusade as an always-on damage boost, stronger against demons and undead. And the Twist of Light capstone turning seal-swapping into an active decision. Swap seals and still land the replaced seal's effect with your next swing. It kills slower than Enhancement, and our guides do not hide that.
The cons are pace, pruning and a narrower damage game. Slower pace than the pure damage classes is the called-out weak spot. WoW Forever pruned hard: Consecration out of Holy, Blessing of Kings and Blessing of Sanctuary out of Protection, Improved Lay on Hands gone entirely. And the faction note that scrambles the old mirror: the Undead Paladin is brand new in WoW Forever, starting in Tirisfal Glades.
Playing Shaman in this matchup
The shaman is the half of this mirror that makes everyone else better. Totems are free stats and utility for the whole party, Windfury procs make melee friends dangerous, Bloodlust is the cooldown entire raids are built around. And our guides' one-liner says raids usually bring two. The paladin brings blessings from an unkillable body. The shaman brings totems from a body that had better stay behind that body.
Enhancement is the better leveling spec in this mirror. A slow two-hander, steady kills, almost no downtime. And Windfury procs that sometimes chain on forever. New toys for the shaman: Maelstrom Weapon turns melee hits into stacks for a nearly instant Lightning Bolt. And Rage of the Farseer is a thirty percent attack and cast speed cooldown for burn phases. Against Retribution's deliberate pace, Enhancement quests faster.
Elemental and Restoration make the shaman three real specs to the paladin's three. Elemental plays the Lava Burst plus Flame Shock maintenance game, with Lightning Overload firing free second copies of Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning at half damage. Restoration answers with Riptide, an instant heal plus a heal-over-time that boosts Chain Heal on the target. The price, per our guides: good at a lot of jobs, master of none.
The cons are management overhead and the missing tank. Totems demand constant dropping and repositioning, the kit is flexible but not entirely hands-off. And there is no tanking spec, the mirror's decisive asymmetry. The faction note cuts the other way: the Dwarf Shaman is new in WoW Forever, so Alliance players get the totem fantasy without the old Horde wall.
How WoW Forever's talent changes shift this matchup
WoW Forever reworked the paladin more than the shaman. The paladin's overhaul was one of the biggest in the beta. Consecration removed from Holy, Kings and Sanctuary removed from Protection, Improved Lay on Hands gone, replaced by active decisions in Light's Vigil, Twist of Light and Templar's Bulwark. The classic paladin was simple and slow; WoW Forever answered simple and left slow alone.
The shaman's changes were additive. Lava Burst and Lightning Overload give Elemental a real game, Maelstrom Weapon and Rage of the Farseer modernize Enhancement, and Riptide ties Restoration together. But the biggest WoW Forever shift here is not a talent: the Undead Paladin and the Dwarf Shaman break the twenty-year faction mirror. The verdict now rests on playstyle alone: unkillable tank-healer versus force-multiplying support.
Which one should you pick?
- Tanking is anywhere in your plans; Protection is complete and the shaman has none.
- You want to be unkillable; plate, blessings and Templar's Bulwark make death rare.
- The Undead Paladin fantasy calls; it is new in WoW Forever, starting in Tirisfal Glades.
- Dungeon groups are the goal; a tank who can also heal never waits for an invite.
- Single-target healing is your raid job; Light's Vigil gives Holy a burst window shamans lack.
- You want the faster leveler; Enhancement's steady grind beats Retribution's slow kills.
- Group damage is the goal; Enhancement and Elemental are real DPS with modern toolkits.
- Totems excite you; free party-wide stats and utility is a unique kind of power.
- Guaranteed raid invites matter to you; raids usually run two Shaman, the best job security in WoW Forever.
- The Alliance fantasy tempts you; the Dwarf Shaman is new and finally crosses the old faction wall.

Paladin vs Shaman: common questions
I play Horde. Does that decide it for me?
Not anymore. The Undead Paladin is brand new in WoW Forever and starts in Tirisfal Glades like any Forsaken, and the Dwarf Shaman is new for the Alliance. The old rule, paladin means Alliance and shaman means Horde, is dead. Pick the playstyle, then check the race list.
Blessings or totems: which buffs the raid more?
Both, differently, which is why raids want both. Blessings and auras lift the party from an unkillable plate body; totems, Windfury and Bloodlust multiply the whole raid's output. The shaman's buffs have the higher ceiling; the paladin's buffs never die with the buffer.
Which one tanks?
The paladin, because the shaman does not tank. Protection with Templar's Bulwark, Sacred Duty and Iron Creed is a complete tanking tree; the shaman's three specs are melee DPS, ranged DPS and healer.
Which is better at the beta level cap of 30?
The shaman, slightly. Enhancement's steady two-hander grind with almost no downtime outpaces Retribution's slower holy kills, and the beta's short road to 30 rewards that steadiness. Neither is fast by hunter or druid standards.
