Paladin vs Warrior: Which Class Should You Play?
The Warrior is the front line at its best: the toughest tank, the classic Mortal Strike duelist, and the highest melee damage ceiling once geared. The Paladin is the safer road in WoW Forever: it levels without fear, heals any group, and rarely dies.
Pick the Warrior if you want the front line to belong to you. Pick the Paladin if you want to level safely and heal on demand. The comparison below will point you to your pick.
The verdict
For most players, the warrior wins, and I would pick it if your goal is to fight. Protection is the toughest tank in the game, Arms is the classic duelist built around Mortal Strike pressure. And Fury has the highest melee damage ceiling once the gear arrives. But the warrior's leveling is rough, with almost no self-healing and real downtime, and in WoW Forever's fresh-start beta there is no pocket healer waiting. Pick the paladin if you want to level safely and heal any group; pick the warrior if you want the front line to belong to you.
Paladin vs Warrior: head-to-head comparison
| Category | Paladin | Warrior |
|---|---|---|
| Leveling speed | Winner Retribution kills steadily and almost never dies, slower than pure DPS classes. | Rough early levels, almost no self-healing; gear-dependent and downtime-heavy until Arms comes online. |
| Solo play | Winner Bubbles, blessings and heals make the paladin brutally hard to kill alone. | Almost no self-healing, rough start; not a solo class. |
| Dungeons | Excellent healer and capable tank; groups always make room for one. | Winner The toughest tank and top melee DPS; instant invites if you tank. |
| Raiding | Holy is a premier healer; Retribution lags pure DPS even with Crusade. | Winner Main-tank material; Fury tops the melee meters once hit gear arrives. |
| PvP | Not tagged for PvP in WoW Forever; durable but outclassed by burst classes. | Winner Arms with Mortal Strike is the classic duelist; Orc stun resistance is huge. |
| Gold farming | Winner Self-sufficient and durable; grinds steadily with no support. | Downtime between pulls caps gold per hour. |
Playing Paladin in this matchup
The paladin is the honest class in this matchup. It runs on mana, so its toolkit works the same on the first pull and the last. Heals land, blessings hold, and when everything goes wrong there is a bubble waiting. Retribution levels fastest, Holy saves parties that should wipe, and Protection tanks on blessings, seals and pull control. You kill slower than the warrior on every mob. But you almost never die, and in the beta's fresh economy every death is a long walk back.
WoW Forever gave the paladin one of the biggest talent overhauls of any class. Holy's capstone Light's Vigil marks a target so your next Holy Shock has no cooldown. It heals their party or damages enemies, and refunds most of the mana, backed by Infusion of Light and Reverence. Protection gains Templar's Bulwark, an absorb equal to 100 percent of your maximum health for 8 seconds, plus Sacred Duty and Iron Creed. Retribution gets Crusade, an always-on damage boost with extra teeth against demons and undead, and the Twist of Light capstone. This lets you swap seals and still land the replaced seal's effect on your next swing.
The honesty tax is real. The paladin is not tagged for PvP in WoW Forever. And Retribution with Crusade and Twist of Light, while far better than its Classic joke status, still does not out-damage a geared warrior. The removals sting: Consecration is gone, and Protection lost Blessing of Kings and Blessing of Sanctuary. The bright spot is the Undead paladin, brand new in WoW Forever, plus the eternal truth that groups always make room for a paladin healer.
Playing Warrior in this matchup
The warrior is rage, and rage is a bargain you pay up front. The first ten levels teach you the resource by refusing to give you any, and leveling stays rough with almost no self-healing. Arms with a slow two-handed weapon is the leveling monster for most people, Fury dual-wields at a frantic pace once hit gear supports it. And Protection is the classic tank. The payoff is the highest melee damage ceiling in the game and the best tank.
WoW Forever's warrior changes are about weapon freedom and smarter rage. The old weapon Specializations are gone, replaced by Weaponmaster. This gives per-weapon bonuses for axes and polearms, maces and staves, and swords, so your best drop picks your build. Arms gets Spearing Strike, a 15 Rage attack that hits Giants, Dragonkin and mounted targets harder and dismounts riders, plus Bloodthrill, which lets Rend ticks activate Overpower. Protection gets Vanguard, Charge in Defensive Stance, alongside the reworked Improved Rend, Impale, Improved Slam and Improved Heroic Strike.
The cons survive WoW Forever untouched. Leveling is rough at first: keep your gear current, take it slow, and accept the downtime, because nothing in the new trees gives you self-healing. Fury stays hungry for hit gear and only passes Arms once the gear supports it, usually later in leveling. And the beta is the warrior's worst environment: fresh economy, no twinked weapon, cap 20 rising to 30, no pocket healer. Play it anyway, with your eyes open.
How WoW Forever's talent changes shift this matchup
The classic verdict was brutal: warriors tank and top meters, paladins heal, and Retribution is a trade-chat joke. WoW Forever softens the sharpest edge without erasing the verdict. Crusade gives Retribution an always-on damage identity instead of a burst window you pray crits, with extra teeth against demons and undead. Twist of Light turns seal management into a real decision. The spec is still not a warrior. But the gap between Ret and respectable is the smallest it has ever been.
The tank debate is where WoW Forever argues hardest with Classic. Templar's Bulwark is a 100 percent health absorb for 8 seconds, the kind of cooldown that saves a pull a warrior eats with armor. But the warrior answers with the toughest tank plus Vanguard's Charge mobility, while the paladin lost Blessing of Kings and Sanctuary. Both tank beta dungeons fine; for the hardest content, the warrior still holds the wall.
At the beta's low cap, the paladin's edge is bigger than Classic guides admit. Cap 20 rising to 30 means months where nobody is geared and every death is a walk through contested zones. And the paladin grinds while the warrior sits down to eat. The warrior's new toys, Spearing Strike's dismount and Bloodthrill's free Overpowers, matter most in world PvP skirmishes. Racing to the cap, take the paladin; racing the meters after it, take the warrior.
Which one should you pick?
- You want to level without ever fearing a corpse run.
- You plan to heal dungeons, since paladin healers get invited everywhere.
- The Undead paladin fantasy appeals to you; it is brand new in WoW Forever.
- You prefer mana's reliability to rage's feast-or-famine.
- You want plate and real self-heals on the same character.
- You would rather be the safe pick than the top meter.
- You want to be the main tank; Protection holds dungeons like nothing else.
- You are chasing the highest melee damage ceiling in the game.
- PvP duels built on Mortal Strike pressure sound like home.
- Weapon freedom appeals to you: axes, swords and maces are all viable now.
- You accept a rough start for a bigger endgame payoff.
- Orc stun resistance for PvP is your kind of racial.

Paladin vs Warrior: common questions
Is Retribution actually playable in WoW Forever, or is it still a meme spec?
Better than ever. Crusade gives it an always-on damage identity instead of a burst window you pray crits, and Twist of Light adds real seal decisions. It still does not out-damage a geared warrior, but for leveling and dungeons it is legitimate now, not a joke.
Which one should I pick to tank dungeons in the beta?
Warrior, and it is not close. Protection is the toughest tank, Vanguard lets you Charge in Defensive Stance, and groups will fight over you. Paladin Protection works and Templar's Bulwark is a lifesaver, but losing Blessing of Kings and Sanctuary trimmed its raid utility.
I have never played either class. Which is friendlier?
Paladin, by a wide margin. You rarely die, your mana toolkit works the same on every pull, and Retribution levels steadily. Warrior teaches you rage by starving you of it, punishes mistakes with downtime, and only feels good once Arms and real weapons come online.
What is the deal with the Undead paladin?
It is brand new in WoW Forever. Forsaken paladins start in Tirisfal Glades like any other Forsaken and play exactly like other paladins. Pick it for the fantasy of a holy warrior in a rotting body, not for power, because there is none.
